Fitted sheet with elastic band - practical solution for your bed

10 lutego 2023
Fitted sheet, bedding, healthy sleep, jersey, cotton, satin, flannel, silk
A sheet with an elastic band is an element of bedding, without which most of us cannot imagine life. Thanks to the elastic fasteners placed in the corners or around the fitted sheet, it is firmly fixed on the mattress. This in turn means that it should not wrap or bend.

Although most sheets with an elastic band fulfill this role, the quality of many of them leaves much to be desired. Their durability and functionality are often at a lower level than in the case of traditional sheets that our parents and other ancestors used. This is due not only to changes in the production technology, but also to the grammage of a given fitted sheet.

Many of us still treat sheets with an elastic band as something that is supposed to protect the mattress from dirt and damage. However, the number of people for whom the sheet is also an aesthetic element is growing. More and more often, we also require from sheets with an elastic band that they actively work to improve comfort or health, using, for example, the Skin+ sheet with documented rejuvenating properties.

Fitted sheet – passive

There are many fitted sheets on the market. The most popular are those made of cotton, which, despite many doubts about its impact on health, is still widely considered to be the best material for the production of bedding. Functional polyester sheets, as well as those made of viscose, are less common. The least popular are silk sheets.

Among the sheets with an elastic band made of cotton, the jersey sheet made of knitwear interlaced at right angles is most often mentioned. Lycra or elastane is also often added to it, which is supposed to affect its elasticity. The weight of fitted sheets made of jersey usually does not exceed 160 g/m2. In practice, it is usually not very flexible and has a low service life.

Satin sheets, also cotton, remain popular. This type of fitted sheet is made of a combination of cotton and polyester. It is intended to provide air circulation. It is smooth and shiny, but at the same time non-stretchable, which translates into its low durability, as well as the weight, which usually does not exceed 170 g/m2.

Those who like to sleep on soft surfaces often choose sheets with an elastic band, which are made of terry cloth. Despite the fact that terry sheets are not the most popular, they find their lovers. Meanwhile, terry cloth is another material made of cotton, sometimes with an admixture of polyester or bamboo. Although they are soft and delicate to the touch, very often their grammage is not more than 180 g/m2. So they are not very resistant to abrasion and quickly damaged.
Cotton sheets are popular, but very fragile and non-functional. The safety of cotton also raises many questions.
Another type of sheets with an elastic band is the flannel sheet, which is returning to favour. This type of sheet should be much thicker than other cotton products, and at the same time softer. Flannel is characterized by a twill or plain weave, which translates into a lack of elasticity. However, their grammage rarely exceeds 190 g/m2.

As a rule, fitted sheets made of cotton are characterized by relatively quick wear. Thus, they are not the right choice for people who care about their wear resistance, but also for allergy sufferers. It is a natural material, in the production of which glyphosate is often used. In addition, it has a porous structure, which is an excellent environment for the development of allergens and microorganisms. In addition, it causes increased water absorption and extends the drying time.

A much better solution when it comes to sheets with an elastic band, so the less popular polyester sheets. Although in the past many people associated polyester with artificiality and lack of ventilation, nowadays fabrics and knitted fabrics made of polyester offer the most possibilities in terms of obtaining optimal properties. They can also be freely modified, which increases their functionality, and the lack of a porous surface guarantees their full hypoallergenicity.

Sometimes in stores offering sheets with an elastic band you can also find a silk sheet. Those made of natural silk cost up to several thousand zlotys. While the properties of silk are beneficial for human skin, its grammage is extremely low. Most often it is 19 momme, which translates to about 82 g/m2. Thus, it is not the most durable.

Fitted sheet – active

A sheet with an elastic band does not have to play its role only passively. There are such sheets with an elastic band, the additional properties of which actively affect comfort and health. One of them is the Skin+ sheet made of an innovative knitted fabric with unique properties.

It was made of the Skin+ material, which contains microcapsules filled with the probiotic Bacillus Indicus PD01. These during sleep force the production of carotenoids, i.e. natural antioxidants responsible for the regeneration of skin cells, which is intended to soften, smooth and moisturize.

Just like ONSEN® foam mattresses and orthopedic pillows, the Skin+ fitted sheet was created in accordance with the design thinking methodology to meet people's needs. It is produced in several sizes:
The probiotic bacteria contained in this unique sheet with an elastic band constantly produce carotenoids that reach the human skin even when it is separated from them by a layer of material. While Skin+ technology is most beneficial when sleeping naked, it also works for people sleeping in pajamas.

Microcapsules with probiotics strongly adhere to textile fibers and remain in them for up to 20 washes at a temperature of up to 40°C. Thanks to this, the active fitted sheet made in the Skin+ technology will retain its properties for a long time. Then, for many years, it can be used as a comfortable sheet with the highest quality elastic.
