In the third episode of the series, we provide quick and concrete answers to questions related to choosing a mattress for sleeping. We discuss how much a good mattress should cost and highlight the best mattresses. Additionally, we address the myth of weighing bones when making a purchase and talk about polyurethane foams in mattresses.

How much should a mattress cost?

Mr. Tomasz from Bydgoszcz asked us how much a mattress should actually cost. He has doubts about what type of mattress is truly the best. Someone told him that not every foam is polyurethane foam, which made him question its properties. He pointed us to several opinions from salespeople he encountered.

It's worth noting that polyurethane foams are the only type of foams available on the market. Excluding latex foams produced through vulcanization. However, it's challenging to classify them as foams since they don't necessarily resemble foam after solidifying. Additionally, latex ages and crumbles quickly, which reduces its quality. Moreover, latex often causes allergies and exacerbates them.

Returning to the topic of foam mattresses, we must always keep in mind that each of them is made from polyurethane because no other foams exist. Similarly, there are no natural foams or foams made solely from oils since it's physically and chemically impossible. The most popular size, 200x160 mattress, costs around 5000.00 PLN (~ 1100.00 EUR).

How to choose a mattress based on bone weight?

Mrs. Alina from Gdańsk asked us about the significance of bone weight because she was told so in one of the Tricity mattress stores. She noted that the salesperson couldn't explain in any way how bones are weighed and how it affects mattress use, but they were insistent that it's important. Earlier, another customer from Katowice reported a similar issue.

In the assessment of our experts, this is a new and completely absurd method of deceiving customers. It exploits the low level of knowledge about mattresses prevailing in Poland. Proposing a supposedly innovative method for selecting a mattress serves solely a psychological purpose because it allows a particular store to stand out in the market.

It should be noted that these salespeople most likely do not possess equipment for measuring bone weight. There are electronic scales available on the market that estimate the mass of bones, muscles, or fat, but they are not intended for professional use. Moreover, it has no impact on mattress selection. This is merely an absurd invention by marketing teams. Only sleeping position matters.

What's the difference between T foam and HR foam, and how to test a mattress?

Mr. Piotr from Ostrow Wielkopolski called us with a question about how to check the composition of a mattress. He also wondered how T foam differs from the HR foam we use in terms of properties. He expressed both astonishment and embarrassment at what he encountered in visited mattress stores, particularly the hypocrisy.

In the market, we observe a huge problem with disclosing the composition of mattresses, even though the currently applicable law imposes such an obligation on sellers. Most often, none of the foam parameters are provided, or only a part is mentioned. Meanwhile, the actual differences between foams are enormous. The fundamental difference is that T foam has non-elastic and closed cells, so it quickly breaks during normal use. In contrast, HR foam is fully elastic and open-cell.

We must remember that according to art. 546(1) §1 of the Civil Code, a mattress seller is obliged to provide us with clear, understandable, and non-misleading information in Polish. This information must be sufficient for the proper and complete use of the mattress. Failing to provide information regarding the full parameters of polyurethane foams that make up the interior of the purchased mattress constitutes a serious violation of this obligation.

Failure to provide parameters of polyurethane foams is understood as misleading the consumer, and therefore, it violates art. 25 of the Act on Combating Unfair Competition by not specifying the essential characteristics of the goods, which works to the detriment of the consumer. We should, therefore, collectively combat such practices, fighting against dishonest mattress sellers.

What mattress should a couple of different weights use?

Weight does not matter when choosing a mattress. People of different weights should use the Osaka Air mattress, which provides excellent support for the bodies and spines of different individuals. This is because the weight distribution points are proportional to the body's surface on it. Therefore, this mattress is the ideal solution for a couple with different weights.

What is the best foam density in a mattress?

The best density for the first layer of a mattress is about 35 kg/m³. In the case of a good high-resilience mattress, it should have the parameter HR3520. This means it is a high-resilience foam with a density of 35 kg/m³, and the hardness is 2.0 kPa. The foam density in a mattress indicates its longevity and should not be too low. However, if it is too high, it can disturb the foam dynamics. Therefore, densities between 30 kg/m³ and 45 kg/m³ are considered most optimal for high-resilience open-cell foams.

How to check the foam density in a mattress?

The foam density in a mattress indicates how many kilograms of a particular type of foam are present in one cubic meter of foam block. It is one of the elements of the complete parameters of polyurethane foams. The complete parameter consists of a letter designation (V, T, or HR), followed by a sequence of four digits, where the first two represent the density in kg/m? and the next two represent the hardness in kPa. A five-digit sequence is also allowed when hardness is specified in N. The letter designations are expanded as follows: V stands for viscoelastic foam, HR stands for high-resilience foam, and T stands for traditional foam with closed cells. You should always demand the full foam parameters from sellers because each element is of great importance.

What is the difference between HR35 foam and T35 foam in a mattress?

HR35 foam is high-resilience foam with an open cell structure and a density of 35 kg/m?. In contrast, T35 foam is upholstery foam with a closed cell structure, also with a density of 35 kg/m?. In both cases, the foam hardness parameter is missing, which is specified in N or kPa. The differences between them are substantial because open-cell foam provides dynamism and greater longevity. Closed-cell foams like T35 tend to deform quickly and are less elastic. If you have the option, you should always prefer HR foams.

What does PU or PUR foam mean in a mattress?

PU foam, also known as PUR, is common polyurethane foam. It can consist of all three available types of foams used in mattress production, namely T foam (traditional), V foam (viscoelastic), and HR foam (high-resilience). Depending on the type, density, and hardness of the foam, the mattress can be more or less elastic and provide better or worse spinal support.
