The modern market has responded to this trend by generating new products and concepts to meet elevated hygiene requirements. One of such products is mattress protectors, items that may not necessarily be essential, but have gained significant popularity recently. However, this is not only a result of heightened hygiene concerns, but primarily a result of active and misleading marketing campaigns by manufacturers.
 
 
The issue of protecting a mattress, on which we spend a significant portion of our lives, is taking on new significance, especially in the context of the recent pandemic. Do we truly need a mattress protector? Let's consider various aspects related to this product, analyzing its benefits, costs, and the impact of a mattress protector on sleep quality and mattress longevity. The prices of most mattress protectors have experienced a surge, often reaching up to four times higher levels than before the pandemic. The purchase price of a protector for a 160x200 mattress, now in most stores, can reach 400 Polish zlotys or more. Wholesale prices for the best ones hover around 50 Polish zlotys per piece, indicating significant retail margins.

The incredibly diverse price range is partly due to the growing demand for mattress protectors and the resulting competition among manufacturers. As a result, retail prices for these products can even reach 500-600 Polish zlotys for a product with similar specifications. The price increase during the pandemic is certainly a noteworthy phenomenon.

Mattress protectors are available in various options, supposedly designed to meet diverse needs and preferences of users. While there are many types of protectors, most of them share a common feature. That is, of course, providing protection against contaminants, moisture, and other factors that can affect the durability of the mattress we own.

Currently, all or most mattress protectors are made from materials that do not allow air and fluids to pass through. The main goal of these types of protectors is to maintain the mattress clean and dry. Many manufacturers opt for fabrics that safeguard the mattress from moisture, stains, or dust. However, it's worth noting that in the case of many of these protectors, air permeability is almost close to zero.

There are instances where some models of mattress protectors have areas that allow for airflow, such as in the side part of the product. Although such functionality is not widespread, it can be an important factor for those who want to maintain the mattress's ability to circulate air at least in part.
