The coconut mattress is one of the world's sensations. Although most of the civilized world has not heard of this type of mattress, it is extremely popular in Poland. And this despite the fact that coconut is not our native plant.

Although we strongly oppose the sale of mattresses with coconut, we are well aware of what is the reason for their popularity. As usual in such cases, it has to be about money. The interest of consumers in the case of mattresses with coconut is certainly put aside.

How many of us know what really hides a coconut mattress? What is the cost of producing a mattress with coconut? Are we aware of how a coconut mattress can harm us? Most people probably cannot answer these questions. This is what prompted the team of ONSEN® specialists to dispel any doubts.

Mattress with coconut – interior

The most commonly offered coconut mattresses are spring mattresses that have coconut plates on one or both sides. The layers of the mattress with coconut designed in this way have no other justification than the use of hard coconut to protect the springs. Otherwise, they could stick into the body of a sleeping person. Meanwhile, the hardness of the coconut slab keeps them in place.

A slightly different application is attributed to those mattresses with coconut, which are mainly made of polyurethane foam, and the coconut board is only an addition to them. The use of a coconut slab in them can have a twofold purpose. It can both make the mattress extremely hard and be an expression of marketing tricks.

Placing a coconut plate in a foam mattress may be intended to hide the actual properties of closed-cell foams placed in it, which will be destroyed very quickly. Such a coconut mattress will retain its firmness, although it will decrease in height. Its ability to ventilate and wick away moisture will also decrease.

A mattress with coconut, which is a product of a marketing game, may have different materials inside. Sometimes these are mattresses that, without inserting a coconut plate, could be satisfactory or even above average for many of us. Meanwhile, it is common for mattress manufacturers to put coconut boards inside them only to increase their sales due to fashion and successful propaganda.

Mattress with coconut – hardness

As a rule, a coconut mattress is a hard mattress, so for some people it is associated with the health of the spine. It's hard for a coconut shell not to be hard. However, this association is completely wrong, even though it is still repeated even by some older doctors and physiotherapists.

In fact, a hard mattress is a very bad choice for virtually all of us. This type of mattress is recommended only for a small proportion of people who sleep on their stomachs, as well as for young and athletic people. Sometimes it is also recommended for stressed people who sleep in a safe position.

Moreover, mattresses with coconut are not products that provide adequate support for the body and spine. Incorrect accumulation of weight on such a mattress, as well as maintaining a non-physiological position of the spine, leads to pain. It causes and intensifies spinal degeneration, as well as pain associated with discopathy and other diseases.

Due to the low elasticity and high hardness, the mattress with coconut presses on individual parts of the body during sleep. Thus, it can cause ischemia of the body's cells, significantly reducing blood flow to the body's tissues.

Mattress with coconut – nature

A mattress with a coconut in most of us causes an automatic association with nature. In fact, they have little to do with it. However, there is an aspect where nature plays a huge role in the coconut mattress

All kinds of natural mattresses are an ideal home for microorganisms, including insects. So when we hear about bugs in the mattress or even bedbugs in the mattress, very often the topic concerns mattresses with coconut.

In the case of mattresses with coconut, the most common insects are house dust mites, as well as bites, also known as nooks and book lice. Their presence in the coconut mattress results from the porous structure of the coconut plates that are placed there.

Unlike synthetic materials, which are smooth by nature, this construction absorbs moisture and creates optimal conditions for their development. When additionally a mattress with coconut becomes contaminated with any substance, including human sweat, it can literally become a ticking biological bomb.

Mattress with coconut – safety

The preservation of coconut slabs and other materials is to increase the safety of the mattress with coconut, at least according to mattress manufacturers. Unfortunately, there are no measures that will protect the mattress with coconut fully and forever. In addition, the scope and duration of the protection will also be affected by the way the mattress is used.

Just securing a mattress with coconut can also be dangerous. For this purpose, not only herbicides and pesticides are used, including carcinogenic glyphosate, but also other potentially harmful agents. In particular, formaldehyde, the use of which is still allowed.

Mattress with coconut – price

Coconut mattress prices can be staggering. However, as is too often the case, we usually base the purchase of a mattress on its price. We are guided by the misconception that an expensive mattress is better than the rest.

This fact is notoriously used in mattress stores, both those offering mattresses online and by stationary sellers. Meanwhile, coconut mats are made of coconut fiber, which is most often waste from food processing, which factories give away for free or sell for symbolic amounts. For their formation, admixtures of latex are used, most often synthetic, because it is many times cheaper.

The real cost of producing a mattress with coconut is therefore very low. A coconut mat with a standard thickness (1 centimeter) and a typical grammage (1000 g/m2) suitable for a 160x200 mattress costs about 50 PLN (~10 EUR) in retail sale, while its wholesale price can be even more than half the price.

When we add to this the price of T-type polyurethane foam, i.e. the lowest quality closed-cell foam used by most mattress manufacturers, often the final cost of producing a mattress with coconut is 150-200 PLN (~30-40 EUR). This cost is sometimes lower, which is always associated with lower quality materials.

The price of a coconut mattress with springs, also known as pocket or multipocket, is similar. They are also cheap material. Including a mattress cover made of low-quality quilted materials that are at the forefront of sales.

Meanwhile, according to market analysis, low-cost coconut mattresses are sold for at least PLN 600, i.e. with a several-fold margin. However, there are also those that cost 5000 PLN (~1000 EUR) and more, although most of them do not differ significantly from the cheaper ones.

Mattress with coconut – not for the conscious

Being aware of how harmful a coconut mattress can be to health and how much its sale enriches sellers, every conscious consumer is unlikely to decide to buy it. This is even more true for people with allergies or back problems. For them, a coconut mattress is associated with a significant reduction in the quality of life.
