In the described
example, we assume that the given
mattress manufacturer is truthful about their products. Contrary to appearances,
this is not obvious, and various
unscrupulous practices are unfortunately common in this industry. According to the
specification, each of these mattresses has a few centimeters of
viscoelastic foam in the
top layer, and underneath it, several centimeters of
high resilience foam in the
second layer. They are similar to each other, and may even be
identical. So why are there such large
price discrepancies for these mattresses?
In the analyzed case, none of the
mattress manufacturers provide the full parameters of the
viscoelastic foams or other materials used. After
lengthy correspondence, they provided the
density in kg/m3, but not the
hardness in kPa or N. There is also no guarantee that these are accurate data. For the purposes of analysis, we assume that they are.
In two different
mattresses priced at 2500 Polish zlotys, their density was around
30 kg/m3 and 45 kg/m3, yet the final
mattress price was the
same. The first foam,
memory foam, had a structure similar to cotton and resulted from a
reduction in prices and quality during the pandemic. It is an expensive type of
polyurethane foam, and such foams are sold by
weight. Reducing its density from
45 kg/m3 to 30 kg/m3 automatically lowered the price by 1/3, which did not, however, affect the
final price of the mattress.
The mattress we analyzed priced at 3500 Polish zlotys allegedly contained
memory foam with a density of
50 kg/m2. However, the more expensive models did not differ significantly in this regard. An Italian mattress priced at 8300 Polish zlotys was supposed to have foam with a density of
80 kg/m3, while a Finnish one had a density of
85 kg/m3. Despite this, there was a huge gap between the
mattress prices.
Importantly, none of the
mattress manufacturers in the comparison provide the
parameters of the foams used in production. Instead, they create their own
proprietary names that simply
do not exist in the market, and not a single foam manufacturer uses them. They always provide specific parameters, which consist of a letter designation (
T, HR, V) and four or five digits indicating
density and hardness. Customers, therefore, have no way to
verify whether the proposed prices are
reasonable. However, the large
price ranges alone should raise our doubts.
Considering the
market realities, the price of each of the analyzed
160x200 mattresses should not be less than
2500 Polish zlotys, but at the same time, it should not exceed
5000 Polish zlotys. A lower price would mean that
there would be no chance to use foams that would be even
minimally decent. And a higher price would probably be
solely the manufacturer's margin. Even with creating the perfect
mattress cover and ensuring a
fair margin, there are no materials that would
cost more.
